In April 2018, the Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson announced that the UK Government planned to sign the Safe Schools Declaration. The Safe Schools Declaration is a commitment made by countries to show their support for the protection of education during conflict. It is sponsored by Norway, and has been signed so far by 74 countries. In April 2018, the UK agreed to sign the declaration. The Make Schools Safe Campaign urges the UK to implement the Declaration. The campaign also calls on countries to implement additional policies which will make schools safe for all children in times of peace as well as war.
Most people agree that education is vital to improve people’s life chances and to increase the opportunities available to them in their lives. The theme of Send My Friend to School’s Spring 2018 campaign is ‘Make Schools Safe’. Oxfam Education and the Send My Friend to School Campaign have developed these materials for the Global Learning Programme (GLP-W). Pupils investigate school safety in Wales and four other countries, learning that school safety covers a wide range of issues; including schools during wars and conflicts, the impacts of natural disasters, sexual violence and bullying and discrimination.
