Resource of the month: Holocaust Memorial Day

27th January is Holocaust Memorial Day (HMD). This date in 1945 marks the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest Nazi death camp. It provides an opportunity to reflect on the Holocaust as well as on subsequent genocides and to consider the importance of respecting diversity today. The theme this year is “How can life go on?”  Mark this important day in your school by using these resources.

Visit the HMD website to find out about more about HMD, events in Wales and download a bilingual activity pack. Use other resources on this website to celebrate the lives and cultures of those affected by genocide:

Additional resources

The Holocaust Education Trust focuses on the Holocaust itself and has many resources suitable for Key Stage 3 and above as well as some for KS2:

This site also houses resource packs for secondary school teachers of Art and Drama

Hwb has links to two short films (3 - 4 minutes) produced by Welsh Government, relating the stories of Holocaust Survivors with strong connections to Wales. One of these gives the background of author Heini Gruffudd’s family in Germany and is available bilingually.

Sadly genocide, anti-semitism, racism, xenophobia and discrimination are still prevaleant today and many people are having to flee their countries to escape persecution. Why not investigate this further by using some of the following resources?

Queens of Syria (available bilingually)

Teaching about refugees (available bilingually)
