Images, values and perceptions

Colourful, real-life images are a great way to bring another country or culture alive in your classroom and engage Are you seeing the whole picture? But of course one photo, one landscape, one person, does not represent a whole country and so there are interesting discussions to be had about similarities, differences and stereotypes.

What impact do our own values have on our perceptions of different cultures? And how do our values differ from other people’s? When dealing with issues such as poverty and development, it is useful to step back and consider how the media or our own cultural backgrounds may have influenced our thinking. Is this something we want to change? How can we do this?
